The Clean Technology program invests in projects to adapt, develop and deploy innovative clean technologies to benefit Albertans and contribute to the growth of the province’s low-carbon economy. In each of our priority focus areas, we look for projects and activities that can reduce environmental impacts, support Alberta’s energy transition, generate jobs in a clean tech economy, and engage industry, researchers and communities to participate in their future energy systems.

We are excited about the emerging technology pathways that can support cross-sectoral industries to reduce or mitigate carbon emissions, decarbonize fuel systems or create novel materials required in new clean technologies. Our carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) focus can help Alberta to demonstrate its leadership in supporting many industries to decarbonize, including supporting the growing hydrogen economy in Alberta. From lithium to vanadium, novel metals, minerals and materials extraction and utilization leverages Alberta’s existing natural resource skills and infrastructure to build new clean tech supply chains in Alberta.

Our objectives are connected with the Alberta Research and Innovation Framework 2030 targets, which include:

  1. A 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas intensity;

Alberta Innovates: Industry r&D Associates Program

Alberta’s high potential, high growth, technology and knowledge-based small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may be eligible for up to $74,500 per year for up to two years to enable them to employ in-house professional research and development capability, to advance the Technology Readiness Level and accelerate new product commercialization.

The r&D Associate has the advanced technical skills required by the SME to make that last leap from research to a marketable product.

This 2 year program is designed to fund SMEs to employ an r&D professional through one of the following options:

  • Level 1 – full-time, up to $52,500 per year
  • Level 2 – full-time, up to $67,500 per year

Campus Alberta Small Business Engagement (CASBE)

The CASBE program is a partnership we have with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to fund collaborations between Alberta SMEs and researchers from Alberta post-secondary institutions.

We offer two streams of funding to help Alberta SMEs adopt emerging technologies developed with the support of researchers:

  1. Stream I with a maximum of $25,000 in available funding from Alberta Innovates and $25,000 from NSERC, and

Industry Commercialization Associates Program

Micro-Voucher Program

Micro vouchers provide funding for high potential, high growth, technology or knowledge-based Alberta small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to accelerate their new product technology development.

The Micro Voucher Program encourages high potential, high growth SMEs with novel, promising technologies, strong management and a reasonably identified product/market fit to accelerate new product commercialization. The purpose is quick access to funds to de-risk technological solutions, and support emerging technologies.

Typical applicants are in the earlier stages of their product development. Most clients enter our programs by starting with a micro voucher.

Eligible applicants can apply for up to $10,000, paid directly to the service provider, to cover eligible expenses charged by the service provider for the purpose of one or more of the following activities:
